Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) organized a Waste Management & 3R Practice Campaign at Homestay Darau Wetland, Kampung Darau Laut on Sunday, 25 June 2023, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. A total of 16 students, 2 lecturers, and 2 staff from AMC College participated in the campaign, along with many other enthusiastic participants from MSU College, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and representatives from various villages in Sabah. This campaign was initiated by DBKK to raise awareness and encourage involvement from local communities, especially in the suburban tourism center in Kota Kinabalu, in the separation and collection of solid waste

The campaign was officiated by the Mayor of DBKK, Yang Berbahagia Datuk Noorliza Awang Alip, followed by an opening speech on the Solid Waste Management and 3R practices Campaign by Sabah’s Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment, YB Datuk Christina Liew. After a remarkable launch gimmick, the participants were given various informative talks about the environment by the Department of Environmental Protection, safety precautions in the tourism center by PDRM, introduction to solid waste management and 3R practices by the Department of Solid Waste Management from DBKK, as well as food waste composting by Eco-Campus UMS.

In the afternoon, the participants were treated to more exciting activities, where they had the opportunity to learn more about the composition of food waste and engage in some hands-on 3R practices by upcycling handicrafts and sewing Eco-bags from used banners. Our AMC students actively participated in these activities, with some of them managing to improvise handmade beetles using leftover plastic cups, while others cut and sewed their own Eco-bags by reusing old banners. Additionally, a few students learned how to make traditional delicacies, such as Kuih Pinjaram, from the local communities. Overall, this campaign was truly an eye-opener for our students, and they gained valuable experience from the event.
